GARDENING BY THE MOON

Since the dawn of time people of the earth have followed the lunar calendar. When I came into my garden practise, and decided it was time to start growing, not knowing where to start, I began researching and acquiring an abundance of knowledge from different resources.

From my own grimoire I read about Gardening By the Moon Cycles and I also used the Farmer’s Almanac as a guide. In the four years since, gardening by the lunar cycle has been the foundation for how I sow and grow each year.

To some, it may sound like an old wives tale, or superstition - but many gardeners of days gone by have practiced it faithfully. When you think about the gravitational pull that the moon has on the ocean tides, a reasonable person might begin thinking how the phases of the moon can affect plant growth. Our ancestors have practiced this way of planting long before we arrived on this planet.

THE SCIENCE OF PLANTING BY THE MOON'S PHASES :

The moon’s gravitational pull determines the rising of the ocean tide which also affects the earth’s water table. Even sap in trees is drawn up and down!

The closer the water is to the surface will ultimately equal more moisture in the soil. This equals germination of your seeds. Just as the moon’s gravitational pull brings water up to the surface, it also pulls it back down.

During the time when moonlight is decreasing, plants are encouraged to grow roots and tubers.

Moon Phase planting focuses on the four moon phases, which are repeated every month.

HOW TO PLANT BY THE MOON:

(New Moon into Full Moon, including first quarter)

This is a time to plant above ground plants:

flowers, beans, tomatoes, wheat, corn, trees etc..

*NEW MOONS and FULL MOONS are especially important as everything can be planted on these 2 days, every month!*

(Full Moon into New Moon)

This is time to plant below-ground plants:

onions, radishes, beets, carrots, potatoes, etc..

LAST QUARTER:

The last quarter phase is time for rest and maintenance. Throughout this week you should avoid planting. Instead, focus on accomplishing daily garden tasks, such as: fertilizing plants, weeding the garden, trellising and pruning.
